The Workshops Rail Museum
The Workshops Rail Museum, an Australian Tourism Award winner and part of the Queensland Museum is a state-of-the-art, authentic heritage and culture experience. The Museum tells the story of rail in Queensland spanning enormous technological and social change through 15 interactive exhibition zones, temporary exhibitions, education programs and events.
The 5000sqm Museum is located on the site of the iconic Ipswich Railway Workshops in the original Boiler Shop, whose saw-toothed roofline is now an icon of the precinct which today still remains the hub of maintenance for Queensland Rail’s heritage fleet. The site is also the largest industrial site open for public access with Behind the Scenes Tours of the Working Workshops providing visitors with a glimpse into the everyday work of restoring and maintaining steam engines.
The Workshops Rail Museum is full of big machinery, colourful multi-media experiences, glimpses into the future and of course, reflections on the past. It’s BIG LOUD FUN in every way!
Collections
The Workshops collection represents railway history in Queensland, including rail & locomotive construction, technological developments and the social impact of railways on the population of Queensland. the collection encompasses paper archives, audio-visual material and 3 dimesional objects.
