Mari Funaki

This exhibition will showcase the work of Mari Funaki, one of Australia’s leading contemporary jewellers. It will feature a major installation comprised of a series of the artist’s recent sculptural vessels.

Abstract forms derived from nature and observations of everyday life form the basis of many of Mari Funaki’s forms. Meticulously constructed from blackened mild steel or gold, her objects and jewellery forms are often imbued with a sense mystery or surprise. Funaki is interested in investigating relationships between space, line and form through her works, skilfully balancing tensions between flatness and three-dimensionality, and positive and negative space.

Mari Funaki will provide NGV audiences with an unprecedented opportunity to view a large number of new works by this important Melbourne artist.
